I'm exhibiting as part of Dorset Arts Week

I’m excited to let you all know that I’ll be exhibiting as part of Dorset Arts Week from 14th to 29th May 2022. This is the first time I have ever taken part in an exhibition and shown off my work in this capacity and Heavers Showroom in Bridport kindly offered me the space to do so.

Founded in 1960, Heavers is a family-run glazing specialist in Bridport, who have a fantastic new showroom that opened towards the end of last year and is already the display of around 10 of my photos as huge wallpaper vinyls, which look incredible!

At the exhibition, which runs from 14th to 30th May, I will have aluminium and canvas prints on display, as well as mounted photo prints and greeting cards. These will all be available to browse and purchase. I will be there personally on Saturday 14th, Saturday 21st and Saturday 28th from 12 noon to 3pm and it would be great to meet those who can make it!

Property Photography in Sandbanks

Recently, I was lucky enough to photograph a stunning property in Sandbanks, Dorset. This holiday property was situated right on the beach at the eastern end of this peninsula that sticks out into Poole Harbour. Many of the properties at Sandbanks are incredible and it’s one of the most expensive places to puchase a property anywhere in the world.

I photographed the property on behalf of Toad Hall Cottages, who have over 1,000 holiday properties for rent across Dorset, the New Forest, Devon, Somerset and Cornwall. I’ve now photographed over 25 properties for them and this was definitely up there as one of the best. By bracketing exposures, having some beautiful weather on both my visits and being able to fly a drone from the property, I was really able to make the most of this property and it’s location to show it at its best and increase bookings in 2022. As I often do with my property photography, I also included photographs from the local area, which I took during my visits to Sandbanks and Poole Harbour.

Over the next few months in 2022, I am going to be improving my property photography further with new editing techniques and equipment. I have now photographed almost 150 properties for estate agents, holiday providers, developers, businesses and others.

Take a look at this property, Beach View, on the Toad Hall Cottages website

Check out other examples of my property photography and more information.

I would like to take the opportunity to provide an update of what I’ve been up to lately in terms of calendars, prints, general photography, as well as new things I’ll be working on in 2022.

Firstly, I’ve spend a few evenings over the last few weeks completely revamping my online shop and there are now over 450 of my best photographs available as prints. I’m offering 20% off all prints for the next 7 days (3rd to 10th February 2022). Once this offer ends, I will be making price increases, so this is a great opportunity to decorate your home or office!

Take a look at the range and enter the discount code ‘February’.

Next, I will be updating my greeting card packs and Location Collections. These have proved very popular since I introduced them a couple of years ago and it is time to switch in some of my more recent photographs.

I hope those of you that have my 2022 Dorset Calendar on the wall are enjoying those. It seems a long way away now, but I am aiming to have my 2023 Calendar released earlier this year, so it can be sold in more shops and businesses around the area in the summer months. If you know of anywhere that may be interested in stocking it, please let me know

If you have any ideas of things you would like to see, please let me know. I’m exploring options such as a Dorset photo book and an online content platform as ideas over the next year or so (amongst other things), with the aim of making my landscape, night sky and aerial photography a bigger focus. Currently I work 4 days a week in other jobs, so photography unfortunately gets a limited amount of my attention and time.

Overnight between Monday 12th April and Tuesday 12th April 2021, there was a huge cliff fall between Seatown and Thorncombe Beacon, thought to be the biggest on the Jurassic Coast in over 60 years! On the afternoon of Tuesday 12th, I visited Seatown and Golden Cap Holiday Park to fly my drone and capture some photos and video clips of the cliff fall.

Immediately, upon driving down to the beach, I could see trees in the sea and the rock and debris extending right across the beach and out a fair distance into the sea. From the air, you could really see the scale of it and how much had fallen. I took photos from various angles and distances from the fall, while keeping within the legal limits for drone flight and having landowner’s permission to take off and land.

I posted the photos on my Facebook Page, which at the time of writing is approaching 700,000 views – view the post. I also sent the photos and video clips to Bournemouth News & Picture Service and it was picked up by a number of national newspapers.

BBC News – Substantial rockfall at Seatown

Mail Online – Biggest rockfall on the Jurassic Coast in 60 years

The Sun – Jurassic Coast has its biggest rockfall in 60 years

The video clips can be viewed on Youtube, here.

Over the weekend, I photographed a beautiful property in the village of Long Bredy in the Bride Valley. This was a property job on behalf of Parkers Property with the property dating back to 1855 and being part of an old school in the village. The property had a lovely situation, surrounded by tall hills and footpaths with countryside surrounding it. Inside the property, it had so many quaint and unusual features that make it truly unique.

The property is currently on the market and available to view on Parker’s Property’s website and is listed with an asking price of £675,000.

Vendor testimonial:

James’ prompt service and the focus on the detail has generated a magnificent set of promotional photos. His photography skills, keen eye for detail and use of aerial photos has maximized the opportunity to create some fantastic sales and marketing tools.

In today’s world such dynamic photographs are critical for prospective buyers to browse online, prior to generating genuine interest. We were so pleased to have asked James to take these photographs supporting the sale of our home.“.

I was delighted to learn recently that I was the winner of the South West Coast Path’s Photographer of the Year Competition in their special Climate Crisis category. This award was put together to find a photo that best communicated important issues that are threatening the coast path, such as coastal erosion, extreme weather and rising sea levels.

I captured this photograph at Lyme Regis during Storm Ellen in August 2020 – not the time of year we usually expect storms of that feroscity! I positioned myself further down Monmouth Beach than I would usually stand to photograph waves at Lyme Regis and looked backed towards the historic Cobb harbour wall with the wind behind me.

I was ready just at the right time to capture this huge wave going high above the Marine Aquarium and fisherman’s buildings that are located at the end of the harbour. These buildings helped to provide a sense of scale and highlighted the issues and vulnerabilities of our choices to live and work right on the coastline, with the growing threat of rising sea levels and more frequent and damaging storms.

The award was judged by Matthew Ponton, Creative Director of Fotonow (CIC) and about my winning image he said, “There’s something really explosive about this image. I love how the nature of the rising wave sits alongside the building, making it look so fragile compared to the sea. The brooding sky above is a reminder that the climate crisis is hanging over us, demanding that we take action.”

My response to winning the award was, “It’s always a privilege to have my work recognised in competitions, particularly when it’s focused on something I care about like the South West Coast Path and climate change. Living on such a dynamic stretch of coastline as the Jurassic Coast, I’ve seen the changes over the last 2 or 3 decades in many of my favourite locations and the increasing intensity and frequency of storms that shape the beaches and cliffs and I hope that climate change is given more focus and urgency over the next few years.”

I recently photographed a lovely 2 bedroom cottage called Ab Antiquo, in the village of Bothenhampton near Bridport, Dorset. I photographed the Grade II cottage on two separate occasions, with some of the photos and externals taken in late summer 2020 and the remaining photos of the interior taken on a second visit in early 2021.

Such a beautiful property really benefits from professional photography and this property, listed with Stags Estate Agents for £1.1 million, had a sale agreed within 1 week of being put on the market. All of the photos I captured using a Nikon D850 and a wide-angle Tamron 15-30mm lens. The editing techniques I use, really show off the interior and exterior of the properties and the dynamic range shows the views and skies through the windows.

The vendor was delighted with the quick sale and said,

“We first met James when the estate agent recommended him as a first rate photographer to use for promoting our house. James is thoroughly professional and has an easy and relaxed approach  to photographing homes.  The estate agent said the most important thing was to get people through the door to see the interior of our house and James’ photos certainly managed this, with over 25 viewings in the first week and seven offers on the table.  Most viewers were from out of the area and several made the journey from London.  I can’t recommend James highly enough.”
